Gout - A Type of Arthritis Impacting The Foot

We have all heard of arthritis but did you know there are three types of arthritis? There is the most common type known as Osteoarthritis, then there is Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is an autoimmune illness, and lastly there is Gout.

What is Gout?

Gout is a result of an imbalance of uric acid in the body which manifests via a build up of uric acid in the blood. This may cause small crystals to form which collect in the joint leading to inflammation, which can be painful.

What are the symptoms of Gout?

If you have Gout you will notice the joint swells up. You may wake up in the middle of the night with an acute throbbing pain in your big toe. You may find the pain lasts for a few hours, and may disappear for a few months before returning.

What causes Gout?

Gout is most commonly found in men aged between 30 and 60 but it can happen to anyone. There are other factors that may impact the likelihood of getting Gout such as genetics, other health complications, obesity and the diet you consume. Yes, that’s right your diet can also impact Gout! Several studies have shown that people with Gout are more likely to eat certain foods. These are high purine foods such as Meat (red meat and offal), seafood and foods containing yeast like vegemite and beer can cause Gout.

When should you see a Podiatrist for Gout?

Whilst it is important to speak to your GP who can assist in controlling and regulating your Gout with anti-inflammatory drugs, your Podiatrist can assist you with foot care.

If you experience any foot care issues which do not resolve naturally, a Podiatrist can assist in alleviating issues by adapting your existing footwear with orthotics or other appliances to ensure there is a redistribution of pressure away from the inflamed and affected parts of your foot. A Podiatrist can also help you determine which are the correct shoes for you, as well as provide any other protective shields or padding you may need for your toes. They can also refer you to a specialist for more serious cases.
