The Foot and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition where the smaller joints are particularly susceptible to inflammation. When RA attacks the joints of the foot and ankle it can cause foot problems more serious than a healthy individual.

If you have Rheumatoid Arthritis it is important to be aware that this can cause pain, swelling, deformity and collapse of the structure of the foot. Symptoms may appear in one or more of the following joints:

  • MTP Joints - The joint where the long metatarsal bones of the foot connects to the foot is frequently affected. These joints help form the ball of the foot.

  • Ankle Joints - The joints connecting the heel and midfoot’s seven tarsal bones, as well as the long metatarsal bones and the shin’s tibia and fibula.

  • Interphalangeal Joints -These joints are where the small phalange bones of the toes meet with each other - think of them like the knuckles of your toes.

In addition to this, you may find Corns and Callus will form over areas of high pressure. If you’re having issues with your feet and suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis, please consult a Podiatrist.

At ProPodiatry Clinic located in Brunswick and South Melbourne, we will be able to advise you on suitable footwear, assist in treating the painful pressure areas, and if needed provide Orthotics to allow you to remain as mobile and pain free as possible.
