Keep Your Feet Healthy This Summer

It’s December and that means we have officially entered the Australian Summer. This means beaches, barbecues, swimming pools and camping in all that Australia has to offer. Here are tips from a Podiatrist to ensure you keep your feet healthy.

How Much Time Are You Spending In Your Sandals (Or Barefoot?)

Sandals are great but think about how much time you are spending in them. Wearing thongs/sandals/jandals in less supportive footwear can lead to heel pain. If you like to show your toes in the hot summer, opt for a shoe with an arch supportive foot bed and enclosed heel counter to provide your feet with the right support all summer long.

Heal Those Heels

Summer for many of us can mean dry cracked heels due to excessive sweating, dry air and open shoes. To avoid your skin getting dehydrated, use a pumice stone in the shower to remove dry skin and lather a heel balm to ensure your skin stays hydrated.

Be Sun Smart - Wear Sunscreen

Australian summers are harsh and we have been brought up with the importance of sunscreen, however, we often forget that this applies to our feet too. Think about it - if you are walking around in thongs (or bare foot) your feet are exposed to the sun and therefore at risk!

Look Out For Infections - Monitor Your Feet

Remember that the floors of communal showers (gym, local pool, beaches) are ideal conditions for bacteria that can lead to infections such as tinea and warts. Don’t walk around barefoot in this areas, and keep a look out for any changes in your feet. Consult a Podiatrist if you notice any causes for concerns.
